The name of the area surrounding the fishery is Duhallow. There are many
things to do locally, such as:
Golf -
Golf in Ireland is always a pleasure and Duhallow's 18 hole gem is located
at Kanturk Golf Club. A fifteen minute drive to the south from Kanturk
brings you to the first tee in Macroom, where the recently extended 18
hole course is set in delightful parklands embracing Macroom Castle. On
the borders of Duhallow within 20 minutes of Millstreet lie the challenging
18 hole championship courses at Mallow and the highly acclaimed Lee Valley
Golf and Country Club. To the west, the world famous championship courses
at Killarney are, as always, a major attraction.
Horse Riding
-
Millstreet is the home of Green Glens, the world famous equestrian centre,
which sees an influx of 30.000 visitors daily to its international horse
shows each year. This ultra modern showground and sales centre for the
Irish Horse boasts 120 stables, a cross country course, three indoor arenas,
four outdoor arenas and has firmly established itself as Ireland's premier
equestrian centre.
Hunting
-
The Duhallow hunt is one of the oldest and best renowned in Ireland, covering
a terrain of banks, deep ditches, stone walls and lush pastures. The hunt
is always a prelude to a social occasion in one of the many local hostelries.
Cross country trail riding and hunting breaks are hallmarks of this equestrian
eden.
Hillwalking
-
Duhallow is a veritable delight for hill walkers. There are a myriad of
meandering walkways, forest trails and delightful mountain paths for those
who love to indulge in the great outdoors. The real joy of exploring the
Duhallow region lies in the solitude and sense of oneness with an undisturbed
environment.
Cycling
-
For those who prefer pedal power, the cyclist will discover a network
of quiet rambling mountain roads and winding country lanes that gently
wander from town to village.
Entertainment
-
At the heart of Duhallow lies Sliabh Luachra, renowned for its traditional
music and set dancing. The villages of Knocknagree and Ballydesmond form
the focal points of this region. Spontaneous musical sessions and lively
conversation in a traditional setting of flagged floors, ancient rafters
and open fires will add an enriching experience to your visit.
Dining -
To sample the excellence of our hospitality try the fine cuisine from
the area. Local restaurants and hotels take full advantage of Duhallow's
wealth of fresh natural produce and fish from nearby rivers and streams.
